Can I study in Germany without blocked account?

Great question! For most international students who wish to study in Germany, especially those applying for a student visa from India, a blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a mandatory requirement set by the German authorities.

Why is a blocked account required?

The blocked account serves as proof of sufficient financial resources to cover your living expenses during your stay in Germany. For the academic year 2025/2026, you must show €11,904 for one year (€992 per month) in your blocked account.

Are there any exceptions?

You might be exempt from opening a blocked account if you can provide alternative proof of financial means, such as:
- Scholarship confirmation: If you have a fully-funded scholarship that covers your living expenses and tuition.
- Declaration of Commitment: A formal sponsorship letter from someone residing in Germany, known as a “Verpflichtungserklärung.”
- Parental income proof: In very rare cases, the German embassy/consulate may accept proof of parental income, but this is uncommon and not guaranteed.

Practical advice:

- Most Indian students require a blocked account as the standard and accepted form of financial proof.
- If you have a scholarship covering all expenses or a formal sponsorship from a German resident, you may not need a blocked account, but you must provide official documentation.
