What is the blocked account (Sperrkonto) requirement for studying in Germany?

For international students applying to study in Germany, the blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a mandatory financial requirement to prove you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your studies.

Current Blocked Account Requirement (2025/2026):

- Amount: €11,904 for one year
- Monthly withdrawal limit: €992 per month

Purpose:

- The German authorities require you to deposit this amount into a blocked account before you apply for your student visa.
- This ensures you have enough funds to cover your living expenses while studying in Germany.

Key Points:

- The blocked account must be opened before your visa appointment.
- After arrival in Germany, you can withdraw a fixed amount each month (up to €992).
- Acceptable blocked account providers include certain German banks and specialized international services recognized by German embassies (e.g., Deutsche Bank, Expatrio, Fintiba).

Additional Notes:

- You may also show proof of funding through scholarships, parental income, or a formal guarantee, but the blocked account is the most common and widely accepted method.
- The blocked account does not cover your tuition fees (if applicable)—you should also provide evidence of tuition fee payment if required by your university.
