Do I need a blocked account for Germany?

Yes, if you are planning to study in Germany as an international student, you typically need a blocked account (“Sperrkonto”) as part of your student visa application process.

What is a Blocked Account?

A blocked account is a special type of bank account that serves as proof you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself during your studies in Germany. The funds deposited in this account cannot be withdrawn all at once—instead, you can access a specific monthly amount.

How Much Do I Need?

For the academic year 2025/2026, the amount required to be deposited in the blocked account is:
- €11,904 for one year (€992 per month)

Why is it Required?

The German government requires this as evidence that you can cover your living expenses while studying, as part of your visa application.

Exceptions

There are a few exceptions:
- If you have a scholarship that covers your living expenses, you may not need a blocked account.
- Some students sponsored by recognized organizations or government bodies may be exempt.
