Is ATAS clearance required for certain courses, and how do international students apply for it?

Yes, ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance is required for certain courses in the UK. This mainly applies to international students (including Indian nationals) who are applying to study specific sensitive subjects at the postgraduate level (such as Master’s, PhD, or integrated Master’s courses) in fields related to science, engineering, technology, or medicine. These subjects are considered to have potential military or dual-use applications.

When is ATAS Clearance Required?

- If your course is listed under “relevant subjects” as defined by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
- Typically for postgraduate courses (Master’s, PhD, or research-based degrees) in subjects like:
- Engineering
- Materials Science
- Physics
- Chemical, Biochemical, and Biotechnology-related fields
- Certain Computer Science and Information Technology programs

ATAS is NOT usually required for undergraduate (Bachelor’s) courses.

- You must include your ATAS certificate with your UK student visa application.
