How do international students extend or renew their Australian student visa?

Extending or Renewing an Australian Student Visa: Step-by-Step Guide

If you are an international student in Australia and your current student visa is about to expire but you need more time to complete your course or wish to undertake further studies, you must apply for a new student visa (Subclass 500). In Australia, there is technically no process called “renewal”—you must submit a fresh application for a new visa.

1. Understand When to Apply

- Apply for a new student visa before your current visa expires.
- If your visa expires before you apply, you may become unlawful and risk deportation.

2. Gather Required Documents

Typically, you will need:
- Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE): A new CoE from your university/college for the extended period.
- Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Statement: Updated statement explaining your continued intentions.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC): Proof of valid health insurance for the extended duration.
- Evidence of Sufficient Funds: Show you can cover living expenses (AUD 29,710 per year as per 2025 update), tuition fees, and return travel.
- Academic Transcripts: Recent results or progress reports.
- Passport: Valid for the duration of your new visa.
- Other supporting documents as requested (e.g., updated English proficiency, police check).

3. Prepare Your Application

- Online Application: Lodge your application through your ‘ImmiAccount’ on the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs website.
- Visa Application Fee (From 1st July 2025): Main applicant: AUD 2,000; Spouse/partner: AUD 1,225; Each dependent child: AUD 400.
- Upload all required documents and pay the fee.

4. Health & Character Requirements

- You may be asked to undertake a new health examination and/or provide updated police clearance certificates.

5. Bridging Visa

- After applying, you may be granted a Bridging Visa to allow you to stay in Australia lawfully while your new application is processed.

6. Monitor Your Application

- Check your ImmiAccount for updates and respond promptly to any requests for more information.

7. Receive Visa Outcome

- If granted, your new visa will allow you to remain in Australia for further study and, if applicable, to work under the conditions of your student visa.
