What are the rules for taking a leave of absence as an international student in the USA?

Taking a leave of absence as an international student in the USA is a significant decision and is governed by strict regulations set by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and your university’s policies. Here’s what you need to know:

---

1. F-1 Visa Requirements

- Full-time Enrollment: F-1 students are required to maintain full-time enrollment during the academic year.
- Leave of Absence: Taking a leave (for medical, personal, or academic reasons) generally means you will not be enrolled full-time.

---

2. Authorized vs. Unauthorized Leave

Authorized Leave of Absence (with SEVIS Termination for Authorized Early Withdrawal)

- You must formally request a leave through your university’s International Student Office (DSO).
- If approved, your SEVIS record will be terminated for “Authorized Early Withdrawal.”
- You must leave the USA within 15 days after your SEVIS record is terminated.
- You cannot remain in the U.S. during your leave period.

Medical Leave of Absence

- If you have a serious medical condition, you may apply for a Reduced Course Load (RCL) for up to 12 months per program level.
- This allows you to remain in the US while enrolled less than full-time or not at all, with proper documentation from a licensed medical doctor.
- Must be approved by your DSO.

---

3. Returning to Study

- Before returning, you may need a new I-20 form and possibly pay the SEVIS fee again.
- You may need to reapply for a new visa if your previous visa has expired.
- Must inform your DSO before resuming studies so they can reactivate your SEVIS record or issue a new one.

---

4. Impacts on Visa Status

- Unauthorized Leave: Failing to follow proper procedures can result in loss of F-1 status and possible difficulty returning to the U.S.
- Re-entry: You may re-enter the U.S. up to 30 days before your new program start date indicated on your new I-20.

---

5. University Policies

- Each university may have specific procedures and deadlines for requesting a leave of absence.
- Always consult with your university’s International Student Office before making any decisions.

---

6. Important Reminders

- DO NOT take a leave without official approval from your DSO.
- DO NOT remain in the U.S. during an unauthorized or unapproved leave.
- ALWAYS keep records of all communications and approvals.
