Can international students work while studying in the UK?

Yes, international students can work while studying in the UK, but there are certain restrictions based on your visa type and the level of your course.

For students on a Student Visa (previously Tier 4):

- During term time: You can work up to 20 hours per week if you are studying a full-time degree-level course (bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD) at a university listed as a “recognised body.”
- If you’re studying a course below degree level at a Higher Education Provider, you can work up to 10 hours per week during term time.
- During holidays/vacation periods: You can work full-time (up to 40 hours per week).
- Work placements: If your course includes a work placement, you are generally allowed to work full-time on the placement, provided it is an integral and assessed part of your course.

Types of work permitted:
- Most types of paid employment, including internships and part-time jobs.
- However, you are NOT allowed to work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach, or as a doctor or dentist in training (unless you are on a recognised foundation programme).

Additional notes:
- Your right to work will be mentioned on your visa vignette (sticker in your passport) or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).
- You should not be self-employed or start a business.

Pollster Education can help you further understand your work rights and guide you through all the rules related to working as an international student in the UK.
