Can international students stay and work in Australia after graduation?

Yes, international students can stay and work in Australia after graduation through the Post-Study Work stream of the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485). Here’s how it works:

Post-Study Work Opportunities

1. Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485)

- Post-Study Work Stream: This is the most common pathway for international students who have completed a higher education degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral) from an Australian institution.
- Duration: The length of stay depends on your qualification:
- Bachelor’s degree: Up to 2 years
- Master’s by coursework: Up to 2 years
- Master’s by research: Up to 3 years
- Doctoral degree: Up to 4 years
- Additional years may be granted if you studied and lived in regional Australia.

2. Eligibility Criteria

- You must have completed a degree from a CRICOS-registered Australian institution.
- Apply for the visa within 6 months of completing your course.
- Meet English language requirements and health/character checks.

3. Work Rights

- The visa allows you to work full-time, gain local work experience, and improve your eligibility for permanent residency pathways (such as the General Skilled Migration program).

4. Other Pathways

- If you study certain courses (such as those on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List – MLTSSL), you may be eligible for further skilled migration options.

5. Recent Updates

- The living expenses requirement for 2025 is AUD 29,710 per year (as per Australian Government guidelines).
- From 1st July 2025, new Student Visa application fees apply (AUD 2000 for main applicant).
