What evidence may be needed for an academic appeal?

Great question! An academic appeal usually refers to the process by which a student formally requests a review of a decision made about their academic progress, assessment, or grades—often at a university or college abroad.

When making an academic appeal, providing strong evidence is crucial to support your case. Here’s what you may need:

• Academic transcripts showing grades or assessment outcomes.
• Emails or letters from professors, tutors, or university staff regarding your case.
• Assignment/exam feedback that may clarify marking errors or inconsistencies.

• Medical certificates or doctor’s reports if your performance was affected by illness.
• Counselor or therapist letters for mental health or personal crisis.
• Death certificates or official documents if there was bereavement in your immediate family.

• Personal statement explaining your situation and why you believe the decision should be reconsidered.
• Statements from academic staff, advisors, or supervisors who can confirm circumstances or procedural irregularities.

• University policies or handbook extracts showing the correct procedure.
• Proof of missed communication or incorrect information provided by the university.

• Travel documents in case of emergencies that required you to leave.
• Police reports if you were a victim of crime affecting your studies.

• Check the specific requirements of the university’s academic appeals process, as each institution may have its own guidelines and forms.
• Submit original or certified copies where possible.
• Make sure all documents are in English (or officially translated).
