What should students do if they arrive late for an examination?

If you arrive late for an examination—whether it’s an entrance exam (like IELTS, GRE, TOEFL, GMAT, SAT) or a university-conducted test—here are the recommended steps you should follow:

1. Stay Calm: Don’t panic. Take a deep breath and focus on resolving the situation.

2. Contact the Exam Center/Authority Immediately:
- If you’re running late, call the exam center or the official helpline right away (use the contact details provided in your exam confirmation email or admission documents).
- Explain your situation clearly and ask if late entry is permitted and what steps you should take.

3. Arrive at the Venue as Soon as Possible:
- Most exams have strict rules, but some may allow entry within a certain grace period. For example, IELTS generally does NOT allow entry after the test has started, but some university exams may permit a late entry (often up to 30 minutes after the scheduled start).

4. Speak to Exam Staff Upon Arrival:
- Politely explain the reason for your delay.
- Show your identification and exam confirmation documents.
- Follow their instructions—sometimes you may be allowed to enter, but with reduced time, or you may be asked to reschedule.

5. Check the Official Exam Policy:
- Each exam has specific rules regarding late arrivals. For standardized tests (like IELTS, GRE, etc.), latecomers are usually not permitted to sit the exam and must re-register for a future date.
- For university exams, you may be allowed in at the discretion of the invigilator, but your time may be reduced.

6. Document Your Reason (If Applicable):
- If your lateness was due to unavoidable circumstances (like medical emergency or public transport issues), obtain proof (such as a medical certificate or official letter) to support your case if you need to appeal or reschedule.

7. Contact Your Overseas Education Advisor:
- If you have applied through Pollster Education, inform your counselor immediately. We can guide you on what to do next and help you with rebooking or reapplying if necessary.

Important Note:
For most international entrance exams, strict punctuality is required, and late entry is not allowed. Always plan to arrive at least 30–45 minutes before your scheduled exam time.
