What should students do when academic reading is difficult to understand?

Great question! Academic reading can be challenging, especially when you’re studying in a new country or language. Here are some effective strategies students can use when academic reading is difficult to understand:

1. Preview the Material

- Skim through headings, subheadings, summaries, and highlighted terms before reading in detail. This gives you an overview of the content.

2. Break It Down

- Divide the reading into smaller sections or paragraphs. Focus on understanding one part at a time.

3. Highlight & Annotate

- Use a highlighter or make notes in the margins to mark important points, definitions, or questions you have.

4. Look Up Unfamiliar Words

- Don’t skip difficult words. Use a dictionary or translation app to find their meanings, especially academic or technical terms.

5. Paraphrase

- After reading a paragraph, try to summarize it in your own words. This helps check your understanding.

6. Ask for Help

- If you’re stuck, discuss the reading with classmates, teachers, or academic advisors. Study groups can be very helpful.

7. Use Supplementary Resources

- Watch videos, listen to podcasts, or read simpler articles on the same topic to build your understanding.

8. Practice Active Reading

- Ask yourself questions as you read: What is the main idea? What evidence supports it? Why is this important?

9. Take Breaks

- Don’t try to read too much in one go. Short, focused study sessions are often more effective.

10. Attend Academic Skills Workshops

- Many universities abroad offer workshops or tutoring for academic reading and writing. Pollster Education can help you find and access these resources at your chosen institution.
