What additional accommodation costs should students budget for?

Great question! Accommodation is one of the main expenses for students studying abroad, and it’s important to plan your budget accordingly. Here’s a detailed breakdown of additional accommodation-related costs you should consider, apart from the base rent:

1. Security Deposit

- Most accommodations (university halls or private apartments) require a security deposit, usually equivalent to one month’s rent. This is refundable if there is no damage or unpaid rent at the end of your stay.

2. Utility Bills

- Electricity, Gas, Water: Sometimes included in rent (especially in student residences), but often extra in private rentals.
- Estimated costs:
- UK: £50–£100/month
- Australia: AUD 60–100/month
- Canada: CAD 50–100/month
- USA: USD 50–100/month

3. Internet & TV

- High-speed internet is usually not included in most private rentals.
- Estimated cost:
- UK: £20–£40/month
- Australia: AUD 30–60/month

4. Contents Insurance

- Insurance for your belongings (laptop, phone, etc.).
- Estimated cost:
- UK: £5–£10/month
- Australia: AUD 10–20/month

5. Council Tax (UK Only)

- Full-time students are exempt, but if you live with non-students you may need to pay or claim exemption.

6. Initial Set-up Costs

- Buying bedding, kitchenware, cleaning supplies, etc.
- Estimated one-time cost:
- UK: £100–£200
- Australia: AUD 200–300

7. Laundry

- Some accommodations charge for laundry facilities.
- Estimated cost:
- UK: £2–£4 per wash/dry

8. Transportation

- Not directly an accommodation cost, but if you live farther from campus, factor in daily commute expenses.

9. Agent or Application Fees (Private Rentals)

- Some agencies charge a non-refundable application or booking fee.

Tip: University-managed accommodations often include utilities and internet, while private rentals may not. Always check what’s included in your rent agreement.
