Can I bring my dependents with me while studying in New Zealand?

Yes, you can bring your dependents with you while studying in New Zealand, but there are specific conditions and requirements to be aware of:

Who Qualifies as a Dependent?

- Partner/Spouse (married, civil union, or de facto relationship)
- Dependent Children (generally under 18 years of age, not married)

Requirements & Conditions

For Your Partner:

- Your partner can apply for a Partner of a Student Work Visa if you are studying:
- A Level 7 or 8 qualification on New Zealand’s Long Term Skill Shortage List, or
- A Level 9 or 10 qualification (Master’s or Doctoral degree)
- If granted, your partner can live and work in New Zealand for the duration of your studies.

For Dependent Children:

- Your dependent children can apply for a Student Visa (as a dependent of a student) if you are studying at a postgraduate level (Level 9 or 10), or if your course is on the Long Term Skill Shortage List.
- Dependent children of eligible student visa holders may be able to attend New Zealand schools as domestic students (no international fees).

Financial Requirements:

- You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support your dependents during your stay in New Zealand. This includes proof of living expenses for each dependent.

Application Process:

1. You apply for your New Zealand student visa.
2. Your dependents submit their visa applications (either together or after your visa is approved).
3. Each application must include supporting documents (relationship proof, financial evidence, etc.).

Important Points:

- If you are studying an undergraduate program (below Level 7 or not on the skill shortage list), your partner may not be eligible for a work visa, but can apply for a visitor visa instead.
- Conditions and eligibility can change, so it’s best to check the most recent guidelines or consult with our expert counsellors.
