What should students do if their passport is lost overseas?

If a student loses their passport while overseas, it’s important to act quickly and follow these essential steps:

1. Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

- Double-check your belongings and accommodation to ensure it’s truly lost and not misplaced.

2. Report the Loss Immediately

- Local Police: File a report at the nearest police station. Obtain a copy of the police report, as it will be required for further procedures.

3. Contact the Indian Embassy/Consulate

- Locate the nearest Indian Embassy or Consulate in the country you are in. Visit or contact them as soon as possible.
- Documents to take (if available):
- Police report
- Passport photocopy (if you have one)
- Proof of student status (university ID, admission letter)
- Passport-size photographs
- Other identification (Aadhaar, PAN, etc.)

4. Apply for an Emergency Certificate or New Passport

- The embassy/consulate can issue an Emergency Certificate (a one-way travel document to return to India) or help you apply for a re-issue of your passport.
- For students continuing studies, apply for a new passport rather than an emergency certificate.

5. Inform Your University/Institution

- Notify your university’s international student office or student services. They may guide you or provide assistance with documentation.

6. Contact Visa Authorities

- Inform the immigration office or visa authorities in your host country about the loss. You may need a replacement visa/stamp in your new passport.

7. Keep Copies of Documents

- Always keep digital and physical copies of your passport, visa, and important documents in a safe place or cloud storage for emergencies.

8. Monitor for Identity Theft

- Stay alert for any misuse of your lost passport.
