Should international students buy a local SIM card after arrival?

Yes, it is highly recommended for international students to buy a local SIM card after arriving in their study destination. Here’s why:

Benefits of Buying a Local SIM Card

- Cost Savings: Local SIM cards offer cheaper call, text, and data rates compared to international roaming on your home country’s SIM.
- Easy Communication: You’ll need a local number for university communication, banking, accommodation, and to stay in touch with new friends.
- Access to Services: Many local services (transport apps, online banking, etc.) require a local phone number for registration and notifications.
- Internet Access: Having a local SIM ensures you have reliable mobile internet for navigation, research, and daily life.
- Emergency Contact: It’s important to be reachable in case of emergencies, both for you and your family back home.

How to Get a Local SIM Card

- At the Airport: Most major airports in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and other study destinations have kiosks or shops selling SIM cards to new arrivals.
- Local Retail Stores: You can also visit mobile network stores in your city or near your university campus.
- Documents Needed: Usually, you’ll need your passport and possibly your student visa or admission letter for registration.

Tips

- Compare Plans: Look at different telecom providers to find the best data and call plans for students.
- Prepaid vs. Postpaid: Prepaid (pay-as-you-go) is usually more flexible for students.
- Inform Your Family: Share your new number with your family and friends.
