What should students do if their luggage is delayed after arrival?

If a student’s luggage is delayed after arriving in a foreign country for their studies, here’s what they should do:

Immediate Steps at the Airport:

1. Report at the Baggage Claim Desk:
Go to the airline’s baggage services or lost & found desk (usually near the baggage claim area).
2. File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR):
Provide your baggage tag (received during check-in), boarding pass, passport, and a description of your luggage. You’ll get a reference number and contact details for follow-up.
3. Confirm Delivery Address:
Give a local address (such as your university accommodation or temporary stay) where the luggage should be delivered once found.

After Leaving the Airport:

4. Stay in Touch:
Use the reference number to track your baggage online or via the airline’s helpline. Many airlines provide real-time updates.
5. Essentials Kit:
Airlines often provide a basic kit (toiletries, t-shirt, etc.) or reimburse you for essential purchases (keep receipts).
6. Buy Necessities:
Purchase any urgent items you need (clothes, toiletries) and keep all receipts—many airlines will reimburse reasonable expenses.
7. Notify Your University:
Inform your university’s international student office—they may provide guidance or temporary support.
8. Keep Documents Safe:
Always carry important documents (passport, visa, offer letter, financial proof) in your hand luggage, not checked luggage.

Compensation & Insurance:

9. File a Claim:
If luggage is not found within 21 days (or is declared lost), you can claim compensation from the airline. Also, if you purchased travel insurance, contact your insurance provider for assistance and possible reimbursement.

- Always label your luggage with your name, address, and phone number (both Indian and local number, if available).
