What revision strategies improve long-term knowledge retention?

Great question! Effective revision strategies are crucial for long-term knowledge retention, especially when preparing for exams like IELTS, GRE, TOEFL, GMAT, or SAT, which are often required for studying abroad. Here are evidence-based strategies to help you retain information for the long-term:

1. Spaced Repetition

- What it is: Reviewing material over increasing intervals of time.
- Why it works: It strengthens memory by forcing your brain to retrieve information just as you’re about to forget it.
- How to do it: Use apps like Anki or create your own schedule (review after 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, etc.).

2. Active Recall

- What it is: Testing yourself on the material instead of just reading it.
- Why it works: Actively recalling information strengthens neural pathways.
- How to do it: Use flashcards, practice questions, or try to write down what you remember from memory.

3. Interleaved Practice

- What it is: Mixing different topics or types of problems in one study session.
- Why it works: It improves your ability to distinguish between concepts and apply knowledge flexibly.
- How to do it: Don’t just study one subject at a time; alternate between different subjects or question types.

4. Elaborative Interrogation

- What it is: Asking yourself “why” questions to make connections with prior knowledge.
- Why it works: It deepens understanding and creates more associations in the brain.
- How to do it: After learning a fact, ask, “Why is this true?” or “How does this relate to what I know?”

5. Self-Explanation

- What it is: Explaining concepts to yourself or someone else.
- Why it works: Teaching forces you to process and organize information more deeply.
- How to do it: Try explaining a topic out loud or writing it as if teaching a friend.

6. Practice Testing

- What it is: Regular self-assessment with quizzes or past papers.
- Why it works: It helps you identify gaps and prepares you for exam conditions.
- How to do it: Use sample papers, online quizzes, or create your own tests.

7. Use of Mnemonics and Visual Aids

- What it is: Creating acronyms, rhymes, or mind maps.
- Why it works: Visual and auditory cues help memory retrieval.
- How to do it: Make mind maps, diagrams, or mnemonic devices for complex information.

8. Good Sleep and Breaks

- What it is: Sleeping well and taking regular breaks during study.
- Why it works: Sleep consolidates memory, and breaks prevent fatigue and enhance focus.
- How to do it: Follow the Pomodoro Technique (study 25 minutes, break 5 minutes) and aim for 7-8 hours of sleep.

Tip: Consistency is key—regular, active, and varied revision sessions are much more effective than last-minute cramming!
