Are German universities open to non-EU students without scholarships?

Absolutely! German universities are very much open to non-EU students, including those from India, even if you do not have a scholarship. In fact, every year, thousands of international students enroll in German universities as self-funded candidates.

Here’s what you should know:

1. Admission for Non-EU Students

- Eligibility: You need to meet the academic requirements of the chosen course and university. This usually includes your previous qualifications (like 12th grade or a bachelor’s degree), language proficiency (English or German), and sometimes entrance exams.
- Application Process: Most universities accept direct applications or through platforms like Uni-Assist.

2. Fees and Costs

- Public Universities: Most public universities in Germany charge very low or no tuition fees for international students, except for a nominal semester fee (usually €200–€350 per semester).
- Private Universities: These may charge tuition fees, varying by program and institution.

3. Proof of Funds

- You will need to show proof of financial resources for your visa application. This is generally around €11,208 per year (as of 2024), which you deposit in a blocked account (Sperrkonto).

4. Scholarships

- While scholarships are available (like DAAD, university-specific, etc.), they are not mandatory for admission. Many students study in Germany without any scholarships.

5. Language Requirements

- Many master’s and some bachelor’s programs are offered in English. You’d need IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent for English-taught courses. For German-taught courses, proof of German language proficiency is required (TestDaF, DSH, etc.).

6. Application Deadlines

- Most intakes are in Winter (September/October) and Summer (March/April). Deadlines vary by university and course.
