What savings habits should students develop while studying overseas?

That’s a great question! Developing smart savings habits is essential for students studying overseas, as it helps manage living expenses, reduce financial stress, and make the most of your international experience. Here are some practical savings habits Pollster Education recommends for international students:

1. Create a Realistic Budget

- List all sources of income (family support, part-time job, scholarships).
- Estimate your monthly expenses (accommodation, food, transportation, study materials, phone/internet, leisure).
- Use budgeting apps or spreadsheets to track spending and stay within limits.

2. Open a Local Bank Account

- This helps avoid international transaction fees and makes daily transactions easier.
- Many banks offer student accounts with no monthly fees.

3. Take Advantage of Student Discounts

- Use your student ID to get discounts on transport, restaurants, entertainment, software, and shopping.
- Check out student discount platforms like UNiDAYS, Student Beans, and ISIC.

4. Cook at Home

- Eating out regularly can be expensive. Cooking at home saves money and is often healthier.
- Share meals and groceries with roommates to reduce costs further.

5. Use Public Transportation

- Public transport is usually cheaper and more convenient for students.
- Many universities offer discounted or subsidized travel passes for students.

6. Buy Second-Hand or Digital Textbooks

- Purchase used textbooks, borrow from the library, or opt for digital/e-books whenever possible.

7. Limit Non-Essential Spending

- Cut back on impulse purchases, unnecessary subscriptions, and frequent takeouts.
- Set aside a portion of your budget for occasional treats to avoid feeling deprived.

8. Find Part-Time Work (If Permitted)

- Many countries allow international students to work part-time (e.g., 20 hours/week in the UK, Australia, Canada).
- Earnings can help cover living expenses and give you valuable work experience.

9. Save on Utilities and Phone Plans

- Opt for shared accommodation to split utility costs.
- Compare student mobile plans and choose one that fits your needs.

10. Plan Your Travel in Advance

- Book flights and train tickets early for better prices.
- Use student travel agencies or discounts.

11. Build an Emergency Fund

- Set aside a small amount each month for unexpected expenses (medical emergencies, urgent travel, etc.).

12. Monitor Currency Exchange Rates

- Transfer money when rates are favorable.
- Use international student-friendly remittance services to avoid high transfer fees.

13. Avoid Unnecessary Debt

- Use credit cards responsibly and avoid payday loans or high-interest borrowing.
