Can I get permanent residency in Australia after studying there?

Yes, it is possible to obtain Permanent Residency (PR) in Australia after studying there, but it is not automatic. Many international students use their Australian qualification as a pathway to PR, but there are specific criteria and processes involved.

Here’s how the process generally works:

1. Post-Study Work Visa (Temporary Graduate Visa - Subclass 485)

After completing your studies (typically a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree), you may be eligible to apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485). This allows you to live, work, and study in Australia temporarily (usually 2-4 years depending on your qualification and location).

2. Gaining Work Experience

During your stay on the 485 visa, you can gain valuable work experience in your field. This work experience can help you accumulate points and satisfy certain requirements for PR visas.

3. Applying for Permanent Residency

Popular PR visa subclasses for graduates include:
- Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189)
- Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)
- Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491)
- Employer Sponsored Visas (subclass 186, 187)

These are points-tested or employer-nominated visas. Points are awarded based on factors such as age, education, English proficiency, work experience, and other criteria.

4. Meeting the Points Requirement

To be eligible, you must:
- Nominate an occupation from the relevant Skilled Occupation List
- Pass a skills assessment in your nominated occupation
- Meet the points threshold (currently 65 points, but higher scores may increase your chances)
- Satisfy English language requirements

5. State Nomination and Regional Options

Many states and regional areas in Australia offer additional pathways and points for students who study and live in those areas.

6. Other Pathways

Some students may become eligible for Employer Sponsored visas if they find a job and their employer is willing to sponsor them.

Important Notes:
- PR is not guaranteed: It depends on your circumstances, occupation demand, points, and Australian immigration policies at the time of application.
- Immigration policies are subject to change, so always check the latest information or consult with our expert counselors.
