What should students do one month before flying overseas?

Great question! Preparing to study abroad is exciting, and being well-organized one month before your departure will ensure a smooth transition. Here’s a checklist of essential steps students should take one month before flying overseas:

1. Check Your Documents

- Passport & Visa: Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay. Double-check that your student visa (and any dependents’ visas, if applicable) are approved and printed.
- Offer Letter & CAS (UK) / CoE (Australia): Keep digital and printed copies.
- Accommodation Confirmation: Print out your accommodation booking or university housing confirmation.
- Flight Tickets: Confirm your booking and keep a copy of your e-ticket.
- Health & Travel Insurance: Purchase and print insurance certificates as required by your destination country or university.
- Financial Documents: Carry proof of funds (as required by your visa), scholarship letters, and any loan sanction letters.

2. Book Final Appointments

- Medical Check-up: Complete any required medical tests or vaccinations.
- Dental/Eye Check-ups: It’s best to address any issues before departing.
- COVID-19 Requirements: Check if your destination requires tests or vaccination certificates.

3. Arrange Accommodation & Airport Transfers

- Confirm your arrival date with your accommodation provider.
- Arrange airport pick-up services if available or book a taxi/shuttle in advance.

4. Start Packing

- Luggage: Check baggage allowance with your airline.
- Essentials: Pack clothes according to the destination’s climate, adapters, electronics, medications (with prescriptions), and a basic first-aid kit.
- Important Documents: Carry originals and copies (passport, visa, admission letter, academic transcripts, insurance, etc.).
- Personal Items: Bring some comfort items—photos, snacks, etc.
- Academic Materials: Laptop, chargers, and stationery.

5. Financial Preparations

- Open an International/Forex Account: Consider opening a bank account or arranging a Forex card for easy access to funds.
- Currency: Carry some local currency for immediate expenses on arrival.
- Blocked Account (Germany) & Proof of Funds (UK/Australia/NZ): Ensure funds are in place as per requirements.

6. Connect with University & Student Groups

- Join official university groups on social media or WhatsApp to connect with peers.
- Attend any pre-departure webinars or orientations offered by your university or by Pollster Education.

7. Mobile & Connectivity

- Check if your phone is unlocked. Consider buying an international SIM card or research local options for when you arrive.

- Notify your bank about your travel plans to avoid issues with card usage abroad.

9. Health Precautions

- Arrange for required vaccinations and carry your vaccination certificates.
- Stock up on any prescription medicines with doctor’s notes.

10. Backup Important Documents Digitally

- Scan and store copies of all important documents on a cloud drive or email them to yourself.

11. Emergency Contacts

- List important contacts: university, accommodation, embassy, Pollster Education, and local emergency numbers.

12. Say Goodbyes & Make Arrangements at Home

- Settle any outstanding bills.
- Arrange for someone to handle your mail, subscriptions, or other responsibilities.
- Spend quality time with family and friends.
