What questions should students ask current tenants before renting?

That’s a smart approach! Speaking directly with current tenants can give you honest insights about accommodation before you commit. Here are some important questions students should ask current tenants before renting:

About the Property

1. Is the property well-maintained?
- Are there any issues with plumbing, heating, or electricity?
2. How responsive is the landlord or letting agency to maintenance requests?
- Are repairs done in a timely manner?
3. Are there any problems with pests or dampness/mold?
4. Are the appliances (fridge, washing machine, oven) in good working condition?
5. Is the property secure (locks, doors, windows, security systems)?

About Bills & Costs

6. What bills are included in the rent?
- Utilities, internet, council tax, water, etc.
7. How much do you pay on average per month for utilities and other bills?
8. Is the deposit amount reasonable and is it protected in a tenancy deposit scheme?

About the Neighborhood

9. Is the area safe, especially at night?
10. Are there shops, supermarkets, and public transport nearby?
11. How far is it to your university/campus, and how do you usually commute?

About Living Conditions

12. What is the internet speed and reliability like?
13. How is the noise level (from neighbors, street, etc.)?
14. Are the rooms well-insulated and warm in winter?
15. Are there any restrictions (guests, parties, overnight visitors)?

About Tenancy Terms

16. How easy is it to communicate with the landlord/letting agent?
17. Have there been any disputes regarding the return of the deposit?
18. Are there any hidden charges or unexpected costs?
19. Is the contract fair and clear?
20. Would you recommend living here? Why or why not?

Tip:
Always try to view the property in person, and if possible, speak to more than one current tenant to get a balanced view.
