What financial discussions should families have before departure?

That’s a great and very important question! At Pollster Education, we always recommend that families have open and thorough financial discussions before a student departs for studies abroad. Here are key financial aspects families should discuss and plan for:

1. Total Cost of Education

- Tuition Fees: Understand the annual tuition and how it will be paid (installments, deadlines, payment methods).
- Living Expenses: Based on the destination (e.g., UK, USA, Australia, Canada), calculate monthly and yearly living costs as per visa requirements (see below for some country-specific numbers).
- Travel & Insurance: Include airfare, health and travel insurance, and any additional arrival costs.

2. Living Expenses (as per 2025-2026 updates)

- UK:
- London: £1,529/month, or £13,761 for 9 months
- Outside London: £1,171/month, or £10,539 for 9 months
- Australia: AUD 29,710/year (from 2025)
- New Zealand: NZD $20,000/year
- Germany: €11,904/year via Blocked Account

3. Funding Sources

- Discuss how tuition and living expenses will be covered: family savings, education loans, scholarships, or sponsorships.
- Ensure all required funds are in place and accessible in the required format (e.g., bank statements, loan sanction letters, scholarship letters).

4. Banking & Money Management

- Arrangements for international bank accounts or forex cards.
- How to transfer money abroad (wire transfers, remittances, etc.).
- Discuss budgeting, managing monthly allowances, and emergency funds.

5. Student Part-Time Work

- Understand if the student visa allows for part-time work, and the local minimum wage.
- Discuss expectations around part-time work, balancing work and studies, and how much extra income (if any) can realistically be earned.

6. Emergency Planning

- Set up an emergency fund for unexpected expenses (medical, travel, etc.).
- Decide how the student will access additional funds if needed.

7. Post-Study Planning

- Discuss post-study work visa options and the financial implications of staying on after graduation (job search period, extension fees, etc.).

8. Regular Communication

- Set up a system for regular financial check-ins (monthly or quarterly review of spending and budgeting).
