How do students maintain friendships back home while abroad?

That's a fantastic—and very important—question! Maintaining friendships back home while studying abroad is key to emotional well-being and staying connected to your roots. Here are some practical tips and insights we often share with students at Pollster Education:

1. Schedule Regular Calls or Video Chats

- Set up weekly or biweekly calls with close friends. Apps like WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Meet, and FaceTime make it easy to stay in touch regardless of time zones.
- Try to find a regular time that works for everyone and treat it like an important appointment.

2. Share Your Experiences

- Keep friends updated by sharing photos, videos, and stories about your new life, campus, and travels.
- Create a group chat or private photo album to make sharing easy and interactive.

3. Use Social Media Mindfully

- Platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook help you share highlights and stay updated on what’s happening back home.
- Comment, react, and engage with your friends’ posts to show you care.

4. Celebrate Special Occasions

- Don’t miss out on birthdays, festivals, or important events—send a thoughtful message, e-card, or even a small online gift.
- If possible, join virtual celebrations with your friends.

5. Plan Visits (When Possible)

- If you return home during holidays, make time to catch up in person.
- Invite friends to visit you abroad—they get to explore a new country, and you get to share your experience directly!

6. Be Honest About Your Schedule

- Sometimes time differences and busy academic life can make regular communication challenging. Let your friends know in advance if you’ll be less available, so they understand.

7. Mix Old and New

- Introduce your old friends to your new friends through group video calls. It’s a great way to keep everyone included and share your journey.

8. Stay Consistent, But Be Flexible

- Friendships might evolve when you’re apart. Stay consistent in reaching out, but don’t stress if there’s a temporary lull—true friends will pick up where you left off.

Tip from Pollster Education:
We encourage students to strike a balance—immerse yourself in your new environment, but keep nurturing those bonds back home. It helps with homesickness and provides a strong support system.
