Can international students bring dependents to NZ?

Yes, international students can bring dependents (such as a spouse/partner or children) to New Zealand, but there are specific conditions and requirements to be aware of:

Who Qualifies as a Dependent?

- Partner/Spouse (married, in a civil union, or de facto relationship)
- Dependent children (generally under 18 years of age and unmarried)

Eligibility Criteria for Bringing Dependents

1. Course Level:
You must be enrolled in an eligible course, usually:
- A level 7 or 8 qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) in an area of absolute skill shortage, or
- A level 9 or 10 qualification (Master’s or PhD).

2. Visa Types for Dependents:
- Partner: Can apply for a Partner of a Student Work Visa (may allow them to work full-time).
- Children: Can apply for a Dependent Child Student Visa (they can study as domestic students in primary and secondary schools).

3. Evidence Required:
- Proof of relationship (marriage certificate, evidence of living together, birth certificates for children, etc.)
- Sufficient funds to support your dependents

Important Notes:

- If you are studying a non-eligible course (for example, a diploma or a bachelor’s degree not in an area of skill shortage), your dependents may only be able to apply for visitor visas, and they may not have work or study rights.
- Each visa application is assessed individually by Immigration New Zealand.
