What happens if a student visa expires during studies?

If your student visa expires while you are still studying, it is a serious issue and you must take immediate action to avoid legal problems and disruption of your education. Here’s what you need to know:

1. You Cannot Legally Stay or Study

- Once your visa expires, you are no longer legally allowed to stay, study, or work in that country.
- Remaining in the country after your visa expiration is considered “overstaying,” which can have serious consequences.

2. Consequences of Overstaying

- Deportation: Immigration authorities may ask you to leave the country.
- Ban on Re-entry: You might be banned from entering that country again for several years.
- Impact on Future Visas: Overstaying can negatively impact your chances of getting any visa (student or otherwise) for that country or other countries in the future.
- Loss of Student Status: The university may be required to terminate your enrolment and inform immigration authorities.

3. What Should You Do?

- Contact Your International Student Office: Inform your university’s international office or student support services immediately for guidance.
- Apply for Visa Extension: Most countries allow you to apply for an extension or renewal if your course is not yet finished. You must apply before your current visa expires.
- Check for Grace Period: Some countries provide a short grace period after visa expiry (for example, the UK may offer a brief time to regularize your status), but this isn’t guaranteed.

4. Country-Specific Guidance

- UK: Apply for a new visa or extension before your current visa expires. Overstaying even by one day can have severe consequences.
- USA: You must maintain your status. Contact your Designated School Official (DSO) immediately to discuss options.
- Canada/Australia/New Zealand/Germany: Each country has specific rules, but in all cases, you must either apply for an extension or leave the country before your visa expires.

5. Preventing Visa Expiry

- Keep track of your visa expiry date.
- Start renewal or extension procedures at least 2-3 months before expiry.
- Keep your documents (enrolment letter, financial proof, etc.) ready for visa application.
