Can students change their major after receiving admission?

Great question! Yes, in many countries and universities abroad, students can change their major after receiving admission, but the process and rules vary depending on the country, university, and program. Here’s a general overview:

United Kingdom (UK)

- Undergraduate: Changing your major (called “course” in the UK) is possible, but often depends on availability, your academic background, and university policy. Some universities may allow you to switch courses within the same department or faculty after your first year.
- Postgraduate: Changing courses after admission is more difficult; you usually need to reapply unless it’s a closely related program.

United States (USA)

- Very flexible! Most US universities allow students to declare or change their major after enrolling, especially in the first or second year. However, changing from a non-STEM to a STEM field (or vice versa) may require meeting specific prerequisites.

Canada

- Canadian universities are generally flexible, especially in the first year. You can often switch majors or specializations, but you may need to meet specific course or GPA requirements.

Australia

- Universities usually allow you to request a change of course or major after starting your studies, but it depends on your academic performance and course availability.

New Zealand, Germany, and others

- Policies vary. Changing within the same university is often possible, but you might need approval and meet certain academic requirements.

Important Points:

- Visa Implications: Changing your major after receiving your visa may require updating your visa information or even reapplying, depending on the country and the extent of the change.
- Academic Requirements: You may need to meet prerequisites for the new major.
- Timing: It’s usually easiest to change early in your studies.
