What should students know before moving to Australia?

Absolutely, moving to Australia for studies is an exciting opportunity! Here are the key things students should know before moving to Australia:

1. Student Visa Requirements

- Visa Type: Most international students apply for the Subclass 500 Student Visa.
- Updated Application Fees (from 1st July 2025):
- Main applicant: AUD 2000
- Spouse/dependent partner: AUD 1225
- Each dependent child: AUD 400
- Genuine Student Requirement: The application must demonstrate a genuine intention to study and comply with visa conditions.
- Financial Proof: You must show evidence of funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses.

2. Financial Requirements

- Living Expenses (as per Australian Government 2025): AUD 29,710 per year.
- You also need to show funds for tuition fees and return airfare.

3. Choosing the Right Course and University

- Research institutions that are CRICOS-registered (eligible to host international students).
- Popular courses: Business, Engineering, IT, Health Sciences, Hospitality, and more.
- Pollster Education can help you shortlist options based on your profile, interests, and budget.

4. English Language Proficiency

- Most universities require IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE scores.
- Minimum scores vary by institution and course (typically IELTS 6.0–7.0 for undergraduate and postgraduate courses).

5. Health Insurance

- OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) is mandatory for the entire duration of your stay.
- Arrange OSHC before your arrival.

6. Work Rights

- Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during term time and full-time during holidays.
- This helps with living expenses but should not be relied upon as your main source of funds.

7. Accommodation Options

- Options include on-campus residences, homestays, shared apartments, or private rentals.
- Start looking early and beware of scams; use university-recommended or reputable sources.

8. Cost of Living

- Living costs vary by city; cities like Sydney and Melbourne are more expensive than Adelaide or Perth.
- Budget for rent, food, transport, books, and personal expenses.

9. Culture and Lifestyle

- Australia is multicultural, friendly, and safe.
- It’s common to experience a period of adjustment, so participate in orientation programs and join student groups.

- Post Study Work (PSW):
- Bachelor’s or Master’s: Stay up to 18 months after graduation.
- PhD/Doctoral: Stay up to 3 years.
- Australia offers pathways for skilled migration after studies.
