How do students open blocked accounts for Germany?

Opening a blocked account is a crucial step for students applying for a German student visa. This account serves as proof of sufficient funds for living expenses in Germany. Here’s a step-by-step guide to opening a blocked account for Germany:

---

1. Choose a Recognized Provider

Students can open a blocked account with providers approved by German authorities. Some popular and widely accepted providers include:
- Fintiba
- Expatrio
- Coracle
- Deutsche Bank (can be complex and takes longer)

Note: Most Indian students prefer digital providers like Fintiba or Expatrio for their easy online process.

---

2. Register Online

- Visit the provider’s website.
- Fill out the online registration/application form with your personal, passport, and study details.
- You’ll receive a confirmation email with further instructions.

---

3. Submit Documents

Commonly required documents:
- Passport copy
- University admission letter (sometimes)
- Proof of address

Submit these documents online (scanned copies).

---

4. Receive Account Opening Confirmation

- Once your documents are verified, you’ll receive your blocked account details (IBAN and account number).
- You’ll also get instructions on how much to transfer: €11,904 for one year (2025/2026), i.e. €992 per month.

---

5. Transfer the Required Funds

- Transfer the required amount (plus the provider’s setup fee) from your bank in India to your blocked account.
- Transfers can take 3-5 working days.

---

6. Get the Confirmation Certificate

- Once funds are received, the provider issues a Blocked Account Confirmation Certificate (Sperrkonto Bestätigung).
- You’ll need this certificate for your German student visa application.

---

7. Use the Blocked Account in Germany

- After arriving in Germany and registering your local address, you can activate the account for monthly withdrawals.
- The maximum monthly withdrawal is €992 for living expenses.
