What happens if passport is lost in Australia?

If you lose your passport while studying in Australia, don’t panic—this situation can be managed. Here’s what you should do:

1. Report the Loss Immediately

- Local Police: File a report at the nearest police station. Obtain a copy of the police report or a reference number, as you may need this for your embassy and visa authorities.

2. Inform Your Country’s Embassy or Consulate

- Contact your home country’s embassy or consulate in Australia as soon as possible. They will guide you on the process to apply for a replacement passport or an emergency travel document.
- Usually, you will need:
- The police report
- Proof of identity (student ID, driver’s license, etc.)
- Passport-sized photographs
- A completed passport application form
- Applicable fees

3. Notify the Australian Department of Home Affairs

- If you are on a student visa, inform the Australian Department of Home Affairs about the loss of your passport.
- You may need to provide your new passport details once you receive it, so your visa information can be updated.

4. Update Your University/Institution

- Inform your university’s international student office or administration. They may require your new passport details for their records.

5. Stay Informed on Travel and Visa Status

- Do not travel outside Australia until you receive your replacement passport and ensure your visa is correctly linked to your new passport.
- Keep copies of all documents (police report, embassy correspondence, etc.) with you.
