Can students study in Germany without blocked account?

Great question! For most international students (including those from India) planning to study in Germany, a blocked account is a standard financial requirement for obtaining a German student visa (“Visum zu Studienzwecken”). The blocked account serves as proof that you have sufficient funds to cover your living expenses while studying in Germany.

Is a Blocked Account Mandatory?

In most cases, yes. The German embassy and consulates in India generally require you to open a blocked account with a minimum balance of €11,904 for one year (€992 per month as of 2025/2026). This account “blocks” your funds and allows you to withdraw only a set amount per month, ensuring you have money for your expenses.

Are There Any Exceptions?

There are a few exceptions where you may NOT need a blocked account:
- Scholarship Holders: If you have a full scholarship (e.g., DAAD, government, or university scholarship) that covers your tuition and living expenses, you can submit a scholarship confirmation letter as financial proof instead of a blocked account.
- Sponsorship from a Resident in Germany: If a close relative or sponsor who resides in Germany provides you with a formal obligation letter (“Verpflichtungserklärung”), accepted by the German authorities, you may be exempt from opening a blocked account.
- Certain Exchange Programs: If you are part of a recognized exchange program that covers your costs, you may be exempt.

Who Still Needs a Blocked Account?

- Self-funded students: Most Indian students who are self-financing their studies must show proof via a blocked account.
- Partial scholarship holders: If your scholarship does not cover all living expenses, you’ll need a blocked account for the remaining amount.

Summary Table

| Situation | Blocked Account Needed? | Alternative Proof |
|-------------------------------------|------------------------|--------------------------|
| Self-funded student | Yes | N/A |
| Fully-funded scholarship holder | No | Scholarship letter |
| Sponsored by German resident | No | Verpflichtungserklärung |
| Exchange program (fully funded) | No | Program confirmation |
