Can students shift to another EU country after Germany?

Great question! Many students are interested in future mobility within the European Union (EU) after starting their studies in Germany. Here’s what you need to know:

1. During Your Studies (Student Visa or Residence Permit)

- Student Residence Permit in Germany is country-specific. This means:
- You cannot automatically move to another EU country to study or work with your German student residence permit.
- If you wish to continue your studies in another EU country, you will need to apply for admission and a student visa/residence permit for that specific country. Each country has its own application process and requirements.

2. EU Student Mobility Programs

- If you are part of programmes like Erasmus+, you can spend a semester or academic year in another EU country as an exchange student. Your German residence permit can sometimes be extended for the duration of the exchange, but you must return to Germany to complete your studies.
- Some universities offer joint or double degrees with partner institutions in other EU countries, allowing you to study in multiple countries as part of your program.

3. After Graduation (Post-Study Work & Beyond)

- The German post-study work visa allows you to stay in Germany (not elsewhere in the EU) to look for a job.
- After working in Germany for a certain period on a work permit (typically 2 years), you may become eligible for the EU Blue Card, which makes it easier to move and work in other participating EU countries.
- After 5 years in Germany with a valid residence permit, you may be eligible for a Permanent EU Residence Permit, which grants you more flexibility to move to other EU countries for work or study (subject to national rules).

4. Summary Table

| Situation | Can You Move to Another EU Country? | What to Do? |
|----------------------------------|:-----------------------------------:|-----------------------------------------------|
| During studies (student visa) | No (not directly) | Apply for student visa in the new country |
| Erasmus+/Exchange program | Temporarily (for exchange period) | Organised via your university |
| After graduation (job search) | No (restricted to Germany) | Must get work/residence permit in new country |
| With EU Blue Card (after work) | Yes (with new job offer) | Apply for Blue Card in the new country |
