What happens if passport is lost in Germany?

If you lose your passport while studying in Germany, don’t panic—here’s what you should do:

1. Report the Loss Immediately

- Contact the local police and file a report. You’ll receive a police report (called a “Verlustanzeige” in German). This is important for both security and your embassy/consulate.
- Notify your university: Inform your international student office or student support team. They can offer guidance and sometimes provide a letter to help with embassy procedures.

2. Contact Your Embassy or Consulate

- Visit the Indian Embassy/Consulate in Germany (or the embassy of your home country if not India). Bring:
- The police report
- Any remaining identification documents
- University ID card or proof of enrollment
- Passport-size photos (as per embassy requirements)
- Proof of residence (like your Anmeldung, the city registration certificate)

- Apply for a new passport or an emergency travel document (if you need to travel urgently).
- Embassy/consulate locations in Germany include Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich.

3. Report to German Authorities (if necessary)

- If you have a German residence permit sticker or card, you may need to report its loss and apply for a replacement with the local Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners’ Office).

4. Visa/Residence Permit Replacement

- Once you receive your new passport, you must transfer your student visa or residence permit to the new document. This is typically done at the Foreigners’ Office.

5. Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

- Inform your bank and other relevant authorities about the loss for security reasons.

Tips:
- Keep digital and photocopies of your passport and visa pages.
- Always keep emergency embassy contact details on hand.
