What documents should parents keep ready for USA education?

Great question! Preparing the right documents in advance will make the USA education application and visa process much smoother for both students and parents. Here’s a checklist of essential documents that parents should keep ready when their child is planning to study in the USA:

---

1. Academic Documents (Student)

- Transcripts/Mark sheets for Class 10, 12, and all years of college/university (if applicable)
- Degree certificates (if applying for postgraduate programs)
- Standardized test scores: TOEFL/IELTS, SAT/ACT (for undergrad), GRE/GMAT (for postgrad)
- Letters of Recommendation
- Statement of Purpose/Essays
- Resume/CV (for postgraduate courses)
- Portfolio (if applying for design/architecture/arts)

---

2. Passport & Identification

- Valid passport (with at least 6 months validity beyond the intended date of arrival in the USA)
- Birth certificate (sometimes required for minor students)

---

3. Financial Documents

Proof of funds is a critical requirement for both university admission and the US student visa (F-1 visa).

Primary Financial Proofs:

- Bank statements/passbook for the last 6 months (savings/current accounts)
- Fixed deposit receipts
- Loan sanction letter (if taking an education loan)
- Income tax returns (ITR) of parents/sponsors (last 2-3 years)
- Salary slips (last 3-6 months) or business income proof
- Property documents or valuation certificate (if showing property as asset)
- Affidavit of Support (notarized, from parent/sponsor stating willingness to fund studies)

Other Useful Documents:

- Scholarship letters (if any)
- CA (Chartered Accountant) statement summarizing assets and liabilities (optional, but helpful)

---

4. Relationship Proof

If a parent is sponsoring the student:
- Birth certificate of the student (showing parent’s name)
- Relationship affidavit (if the sponsor is not a direct parent)

---

5. University Related Documents

- Offer/Admission letter (I-20 form is issued after admission)
- SEVIS fee payment receipt
- Visa appointment confirmation letter

---

6. Additional Documents for Visa Interview

- SOP for Visa (explaining study plan and future goals)
- Any previous visa refusal letters (if applicable)
- Photographs (as per US visa specifications)

---

Recommended: Keep both originals and clear photocopies/scanned copies of all documents ready.
