What risks should parents consider for Australia?

That’s a great and responsible question! When planning to send your child to Australia for higher education, there are several important risks and considerations for parents to be aware of. At Pollster Education, we ensure parents are fully informed and prepared for each aspect. Here are the key risks to consider:

1. Financial Risks

- Tuition & Living Costs: Education and living expenses in Australia are significant. As of 2025, the required living expenses are AUD 29,710 per year, and tuition varies by course and university.
- Exchange Rate Fluctuations: Currency changes can affect the total cost.
- Visa Fee Increase: From 1st July 2025, the student visa fee is AUD 2,000 for the main applicant, AUD 1,225 for a spouse/dependent partner, and AUD 400 per dependent child.

2. Safety and Well-being

- Personal Safety: Australia is generally safe, but like any country, petty crimes can occur. It’s important your child is aware of their surroundings and follows safety guidelines.
- Health Insurance: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory. Ensure your child understands how to access healthcare.
- Mental Health: Adapting to a new culture can be stressful. Encourage your child to seek support from university counselling services if needed.

3. Academic Risks

- Adapting to New Systems: The academic environment, teaching styles, and expectations may differ from India. This can be challenging at first.
- Course Changes/Withdrawals: Withdrawing or failing subjects may affect visa status, finances, and future plans.

4. Visa and Legal Compliance

- Visa Conditions: Breaching visa rules (e.g., working more than permitted hours or not maintaining course progress) can lead to visa cancellation.
- Post-Study Work Visas: Ensure you and your child understand the eligibility and requirements for post-study work rights (up to 18 months for Bachelor’s/Master’s graduates).

5. Employment Risks

- Part-time Job Market: While students can work limited hours, jobs are not guaranteed, and balancing work and study is crucial.
- Exploitation: International students can be vulnerable to workplace exploitation. Awareness of rights under Australian law is essential.

6. Cultural and Social Adjustment

- Homesickness: Being far from home can be emotionally challenging. Regular communication and support are important.
- Cultural Differences: Adjusting to a new country’s customs, food, and social norms may take time.

7. Accommodation Risks

- Housing Scams: Be cautious when arranging accommodation from abroad. Use university-recommended or verified providers.
- Rental Agreements: Understand tenancy laws and rights.

8. Health Risks

- Medical Emergencies: Know how to access emergency services and hospitals.
- Insurance Exclusions: Ensure OSHC covers all necessary treatments.
