What backup funds are needed for Germany?

For students applying to study in Germany, you must show proof of sufficient funds to cover your living expenses. This is typically done through a German Blocked Account.

As per the 2025/2026 update:
- Total Amount Required: €11,904 for one year
- Monthly Amount: €992 per month

This blocked account is mandatory for most international students applying for a German student visa. The funds must be deposited into a blocked account before you apply for your visa, and you will only be able to withdraw a fixed amount every month while in Germany.

What does this cover?
These funds are meant to cover your basic living expenses such as accommodation, food, health insurance, transportation, and study materials.

How do you show proof?
- Open a blocked account with an approved German bank or provider
- Deposit the required amount (€11,904)
- Submit the blocked account confirmation as part of your visa application

Additional Recommendations:
- You may need to show proof of tuition fee payment (if applicable)
- Health insurance is also mandatory
- Some universities may require additional proof of funds
