What happens after Switzerland visa approval?

Once your Switzerland student visa is approved, here’s what typically happens next:

1. Collect Your Visa

- You will be notified by the Swiss Embassy or Consulate where you applied.
- Collect your visa sticker, which will be placed in your passport. This visa (usually a National “D” visa) allows you to enter Switzerland.

2. Travel to Switzerland

- You must enter Switzerland within the validity period mentioned on your visa (usually 90 days).
- Make sure to carry all original documents (admission letter, proof of accommodation, financial proof, health insurance, etc.) as the border authorities may ask for them on arrival.

3. Register with the Local Authorities

- Within 14 days of arrival, you must register at the Residents’ Registration Office (“Einwohnerkontrolle”/“Contrôle des habitants”) in your Swiss city/town.
- Bring your passport, visa, acceptance letter, proof of address, passport photos, and proof of financial means.

4. Apply for Your Swiss Residence Permit

- After registering, you will need to apply for your residence permit (“Ausländerausweis”/“Permis de séjour”) for study purposes.
- The local migration office will process your application and issue your permit, usually in the form of a biometric ID card.
- This permit allows you to stay in Switzerland for the duration of your studies.

5. Open a Swiss Bank Account (if required)

- Some universities or landlords require a Swiss bank account for payments.

6. Health Insurance

- Health insurance is mandatory in Switzerland.
- If you haven’t already arranged international student health insurance, you must get Swiss health insurance within three months of arrival, unless your existing insurance is recognized.

7. Start Your Studies

- Attend university orientation and begin your course.
