How much money is required for Canada student visa?


For a Canada student visa (Study Permit), you must show proof of sufficient funds to cover:

1. Tuition fees for your first year, plus
2. Living expenses for yourself and any accompanying family members.

Living Expenses Requirement (2024/2025 Update)



As per the latest IRCC guidelines, from January 1, 2024, the minimum proof of funds required for a single student (excluding tuition) is:

- CAD $20,635 per year (outside Quebec)
- Tuition fees for the first year (varies by program/institution)
- Return transportation cost (optional, but recommended)

If you have family members accompanying you:
- CAD $6,885 for the first family member
- CAD $3,450 for each additional accompanying family member

Example calculation:
- Tuition Fees: (as per your offer letter, varies widely)
- Living Expenses: CAD $20,635 (for student only, outside Quebec)
- Total Funds Required: Tuition Fees + CAD $20,635

For Quebec:


- Student (18+ years): CAD $15,078/year (living expenses)
- Spouse: CAD $8,159/year
- Each dependent child: CAD $4,444/year

Proof of Funds – Acceptable options:


- Bank statements (past 4-6 months)
- Education loan letter (sanctioned)
- GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) of CAD $20,635 (for SDS applicants)
- Scholarship/funding letter (if applicable)
- Proof of paid tuition and accommodation fees

SDS (Student Direct Stream):


If you’re applying under the SDS route (for Indian students), you must:
- Pay the first year’s tuition fee in advance
- Purchase a GIC of CAD $20,635
