What happens after Germany visa approval?

Congratulations on getting your Germany student visa approved! Here’s what happens next and what you should do:

1. Check Your Visa

- Carefully review the visa sticker in your passport for accuracy (name, dates, type of visa, number of entries).
- The visa you receive is usually a National Visa (D-Visa), valid for 90-180 days, allowing you to enter Germany and settle initial formalities.

2. Book Your Travel

- You can now book your flight to Germany. Make sure your arrival date is within the validity period of your visa.

3. Prepare Your Documents for Travel

- Passport with the visa sticker.
- University admission letter.
- Proof of accommodation in Germany.
- Proof of health insurance (often mandatory for entry).
- Proof of blocked account or financial means.
- Any other documents specified by the German consulate.

4. Arriving in Germany

- Upon arrival, you’ll go through immigration. Be ready to show your documents if asked.

5. Register Your Address (Anmeldung)

- Within 1-2 weeks of arrival, you must register your local address at the city’s registration office (Bürgeramt/Einwohnermeldeamt).
- You’ll receive a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung), needed for many other formalities.

6. Open a Bank Account (if not already done)

- If you haven’t activated your blocked account, do so now. Most students activate their blocked account after arrival.

7. Health Insurance

- If you haven’t already obtained German health insurance, arrange it immediately, as it’s required for university enrolment and residence permit extension.

8. University Enrollment

- Complete your enrollment at the university. You’ll need your registration certificate, health insurance, and other documents.

9. Apply for Residence Permit

- Before your visa expires (usually within the first 3 months), apply for a residence permit at the local Foreigners’ Office (Ausländerbehörde).
- Take all your documents: passport, visa, university enrollment certificate, proof of funds, health insurance, and address registration.
- The residence permit is typically valid for the duration of your studies.

10. Settle In

- Get your student ID, open a local SIM card, and explore your new city!
