Can I bring my spouse or dependent if I study in Canada?

Yes, you can bring your spouse or dependent children with you if you study in Canada! Here’s how it works:

1. Spouse/Common-law Partner:

- Spousal Open Work Permit: Your spouse or common-law partner can apply for an open work permit, which allows them to work full-time for any employer in Canada while you study full-time at a designated learning institution (DLI).
- The work permit is usually valid for the same length of time as your study permit.

2. Dependent Children:

- Study Permit for Children: School-aged children (typically 5-18 years old) can attend pre-school, primary, or secondary school in Canada. They may require a study permit depending on their age and the province.
- Visa Application: You can include your dependent children in your initial study permit application or apply for them separately.

3. Application Process:

- Apply Together: You can apply for your study permit, your spouse’s open work permit, and your children’s study permits/visitor visas at the same time. This improves your chances of getting approved.
- Documentation: You’ll need to show proof of funds to support your family while in Canada and submit documents proving your relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificates, etc.).

4. Financial Requirements:

- You must demonstrate you have enough funds to support yourself and your dependents.
- The amount varies, but as a guideline:
- For the student: Tuition + CAD 20,635 per year for living expenses (outside Quebec).
- For spouse: Additional CAD 7,000 per year.
- For each child: Additional CAD 3,000 per year.

5. Post-Study Pathways:

- Your spouse may continue to work if you get a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after you finish your studies.
- Your children may continue their education in Canada.
