What backup funds should parents keep for UK studies?

When planning for your child’s studies in the UK, it’s crucial to keep adequate backup funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and other costs as required by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Here’s a breakdown of what you need to consider:

1. Tuition Fees

- Annual tuition fees vary by university and course, typically ranging from £10,000 to £30,000 or more per year.
- You must show proof of payment for at least the first year or provide evidence of funds to cover the outstanding tuition.

2. Living Expenses (Cost of Living)

- As per the latest UKVI requirements (2026 update, effective from 11 November 2025):
- London: £1,529 per month (Total for 9 months: £13,761)
- Outside London: £1,171 per month (Total for 9 months: £10,539)
- These funds must be in addition to tuition fees. If your child’s course is longer than 9 months, you still need to show funds for only 9 months as per visa requirements.

3. Additional Costs

- Visa application fee: Approximately £490 (subject to change)
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776 per year (may vary)
- Travel and emergencies: Consider keeping an extra buffer for flights, emergencies, or unforeseen expenses (recommended £1,000–£2,000).

4. Source of Funds

- Funds can be shown in bank accounts (student’s or parent’s), education loans from recognized banks/NBFCs, or official financial sponsorships.
- The funds should be maintained for at least 28 consecutive days and should not be older than 31 days on the date of application.

5. Backup/Contingency Funds

- It is advisable to keep at least 5-10% extra over the required amount to cover any fluctuations in exchange rates or unexpected costs.
- For example, for London, keeping about £15,000–£16,000 for living expenses, in addition to tuition, is a safe approach.

Summary Table: Minimum Funds for UK Student Visa (2026 Update):

| Region | Living Expenses (9 months) | Suggested Backup/Buffer | Total Suggested Funds (Living Only) |
|----------------|---------------------------|------------------------|-------------------------------------|
| London | £13,761 | £1,200–£2,000 | £15,000–£16,000 |
| Outside London | £10,539 | £1,000–£2,000 | £11,500–£12,500 |

---

Recommendation:
Parents should be ready with funds for at least the first year’s tuition fee + minimum 9 months of living expenses (as per the location) + an additional 5-10% buffer. All funds should be readily available and documented for the visa application.
