Can parents financially support studies in Germany?

Yes, parents can financially support their child's studies in Germany, and this is a common practice for many international students.

For a German student visa, students need to demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover their living expenses while studying in Germany. As of 2025/2026, the required amount is €11,904 per year (or €992 per month), which is usually shown through a blocked account (“Sperrkonto”).

How can parents support financially?

1. Blocked Account:
Parents can transfer the required funds (€11,904) into a blocked account in the student’s name. This is the most widely accepted proof of financial resources by German embassies and consulates.

2. Parental Income Certificate:
In some cases, parents can submit an “income and financial status” declaration. This involves providing official documents proving their regular income and commitment to cover all costs related to the student’s stay in Germany. This method is less common and may require legal attestation or a formal obligation letter ("Verpflichtungserklärung") at the German consulate.

3. Scholarships or Education Loans:
If parents are funding studies through an education loan, the sanction letter from an approved bank is also acceptable as proof of funds.

4. Sponsorship Letter:
Parents can write a sponsorship letter stating their commitment to support the student financially, accompanied by supporting documents like bank statements, IT returns, and salary slips.

Note:
The blocked account is the preferred and simplest method, as it is directly accepted by German authorities for student visa applications.
