Can students work more than 48 hours per fortnight in Australia?

As per current Australian student visa regulations, students are generally allowed to work up to 48 hours per fortnight (2 weeks) during their study periods. This rule is strictly enforced:

- During session (when your course is in progress):
You cannot work more than 48 hours per fortnight.
- During scheduled course breaks (like semester holidays):
You may work unlimited hours.

Exceeding this limit may result in visa violations and could impact your visa status.

Exceptions:
Some research-based master’s or doctoral degree students may have different work rights. If you’re enrolled in such a program and have started your thesis or research work, you may be eligible to work unlimited hours.

Recent Updates:
Temporary work hour relaxations introduced during COVID-19 have ended. The 48-hour per fortnight cap is now in force.
