Can I change DLI after reaching Canada?

Yes, you can change your Designated Learning Institution (DLI) after reaching Canada as an international student. Many students decide to switch institutions for various reasons such as course fit, location, or personal circumstances. However, there are important steps and rules you need to follow:

Steps to Change DLI in Canada:

1. Ensure Your New School is a DLI:
The institution you wish to transfer to must also be a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). You can check the list of DLIs on the official Canadian government website.

2. Notify IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada):
You must update your DLI information in your MyCIC (IRCC) account.
- Log in to your IRCC account.
- Select the "Transfer schools" option under your study permit application.
- Enter details of your new DLI and your new student ID number.

3. Meet Admission and Visa Requirements:
- Ensure you have received an official offer of admission from your new DLI.
- Some DLIs or programs may have specific requirements or may require you to reapply for a study permit if your program changes significantly.

4. Maintain Legal Status:
- You must remain a full-time student at a DLI to keep your study permit valid.
- If you stop studying or switch to a non-DLI, your study permit can become invalid.

5. Get a New Letter of Acceptance (if required):
- If your institution or program changes significantly (for example, switching from college to university), you may need to provide a new letter of acceptance to IRCC.

6. No Travel Needed:
- You do not need to leave Canada to change your DLI. The process can be completed online.

Important Considerations:

- Student Visa Conditions: Make sure you comply with all conditions of your study permit during the transition.
- Refunds and Transfers: Arrange for any tuition refunds or transcript transfers with your current and new institutions.
- Work Eligibility: Ensure you remain eligible to work (on/off campus) as per your study permit and the rules of your new DLI.
