For Canada, international students applying for a study permit under the Student Direct Stream (SDS) are required to purchase a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) to cover their living expenses.

GIC Amount Required (2024/2025):
- CAD $20,635 is the mandatory GIC amount for one year (as per the latest update by IRCC).

This amount must be deposited into a participating Canadian financial institution before you apply for your student visa. After you arrive in Canada, the GIC is released to you in installments to help cover your living costs while you study.
