Can I bring my spouse on a UK student visa now?

As of the latest UK student visa regulations, bringing your spouse (dependant) on a UK student visa has changed.

Key Update (2024):
- Only postgraduate research students (for example, PhD or other research-based higher degree students) can bring dependants (spouse/children) to the UK.
- Taught postgraduate (such as Master’s) and undergraduate students are generally NOT eligible to bring dependants unless their course started before January 2024.

Who qualifies to bring dependants?
- You must be a full-time student sponsored by a higher education provider on a doctoral level or research-based postgraduate course (lasting 9 months or more).
- If you are sponsored by the government for a course of 6 months or more, you may also be eligible.

What does this mean for you?
- If you are applying for a Master’s (taught) or undergraduate course starting in or after January 2024, you cannot bring your spouse as a dependant.
- If you are applying for a PhD, Doctorate, or research-based Master’s, you can bring your spouse and children.
