How long is German student visa valid?

A German student visa is typically valid for up to 3 months (90 days) upon initial entry into Germany. This is known as the national visa (D visa). Once you arrive in Germany, you must convert this visa into a residence permit at the local Foreigners’ Office ("Ausländerbehörde").

Student Residence Permit Validity:
- The residence permit is usually granted for 1 to 2 years at a time, depending on the length of your study program and proof of sufficient funds.
- It can be renewed until you complete your studies, provided you maintain enrolment and meet all requirements.

Post-Study Stay:
- After completing your degree, you may apply for an 18-month post-study work visa to seek employment related to your qualification. (This is known as the “job seeker” visa.)

Summary:
- Initial visa: Up to 3 months
- Residence permit: 1–2 years, renewable throughout your studies
- Post-study work: Up to 18 months after graduation
