CPT (Curricular Practical Training) is a type of work authorization available to international students in the USA on an F-1 visa. It allows students to gain practical work experience that is directly related to their major or field of study, while they are still completing their academic program.

Key Features of CPT:

- Type: Temporary employment authorization.
- Purpose: To participate in internships, co-ops, or other off-campus work experiences that are an integral part of the established curriculum.
- Paid or Unpaid: Can be paid or unpaid.
- Full-time or Part-time: Can be full-time (more than 20 hours/week) or part-time (20 hours/week or less).

Who is Eligible for CPT?

1. F-1 Student Status:
You must be in valid F-1 student status.

2. Enrollment Requirement:
- You must have completed at least one full academic year (two semesters) as a full-time student at a SEVP-certified institution.
- Exception: Graduate students whose programs require immediate participation in CPT may be eligible from the first semester.

3. Offer of Employment:
- You must have a job offer related to your major field of study before you apply for CPT, as the authorization is employer-specific.

4. Course Registration:
- The work experience must be a required part of your curriculum or earn academic credit (such as an internship course or practicum).

5. Authorization:
- You must receive CPT authorization from your university’s international student office before starting work.
- You will be issued a new I-20 with the CPT authorization noted.

Important Notes:

- Duration: There is no cumulative maximum for CPT, but if you do 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you will lose eligibility for OPT (Optional Practical Training).
- Not for General Employment: CPT cannot be used for general off-campus work; it must be directly related to your field of study.
