What is Genuine Student requirement in Australia?

The Genuine Student (GS) requirement is a key criterion introduced by the Australian Government for student visa (Subclass 500) applications. It replaced the earlier Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement in March 2024. The GS requirement is designed to ensure that applicants genuinely intend to study in Australia and have a clear academic and career purpose for their chosen course.

What Does the Genuine Student Requirement Involve?

You must demonstrate that you are a genuine student by providing information and evidence about:

1. Your Academic Background and Intentions
- Why you chose the specific course, institution, and Australia as your study destination.
- How the course fits into your academic and career plans.
- Your previous education and academic achievements.

2. Your Financial Capacity
- Proof that you have sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and travel costs.
- As of 2025, the Australian Government living expenses requirement is AUD 29,710 per year.

3. Your Immigration History
- Details of any previous visa applications or refusals for Australia or other countries.

4. Your Circumstances in Home Country
- Ties to your home country (such as family, employment, or commitments) that suggest you will return after your studies.
- Economic, political, or social circumstances.

5. English Language Proficiency
- Evidence of meeting English language requirements (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, etc.).

6. Future Plans
- Clear explanation of your career and study goals after graduation.

How is the GS Requirement Assessed?

You will need to provide a personal statement (sometimes called a GS Statement) and supporting documents with your visa application. The Department of Home Affairs will review this information, looking for consistency and evidence of genuine intent to study.

Common Supporting Documents:

- Offer letter from an Australian university or college
- Academic transcripts and certificates
- English proficiency test results
- Statement of Purpose (SOP) or GS Statement
- Proof of funds (bank statements, education loan, scholarship letter, etc.)
- Evidence of ties to home country (family, property, employment, etc.)
- CV/Resume (if applicable)
- Any previous visa documents or travel history

Why is the GS Requirement Important?

The GS requirement helps safeguard the integrity of the Australian student visa program by ensuring that only genuine students are granted visas, not those seeking to use a student visa as a way to stay in Australia for other reasons.
