Can I settle permanently in Germany after graduation?

Great question! Many international students are interested in settling in Germany after graduation. Here’s how the process typically works:

1. Post-Study Work Visa (Job-Seeker Visa)

After completing your degree at a recognized German university, you can apply for an 18-month post-study residence permit to look for a job related to your field of study. During this period, you can work in any job to support yourself.

2. Securing a Job

If you find a job that is relevant to your qualification during these 18 months, you can switch to a German work visa or an EU Blue Card (if you meet the salary threshold and other requirements).

3. Permanent Residency (Settlement Permit)

Once you have been employed in a qualified job (related to your degree) and living in Germany, you can apply for permanent residency:
- With an EU Blue Card: Usually after 21–33 months of skilled employment (can be reduced to 21 months if you have B1-level German language skills; otherwise 33 months).
- With a regular work permit: You may apply after 4 years of employment.

4. Requirements for Permanent Residency

- Proof of stable income and employment
- Proof of sufficient German language skills (at least B1 level)
- Pension insurance contributions
- No criminal record
- Secure accommodation

5. Pathway to German Citizenship

After holding a permanent residence permit for a certain period (typically 6–8 years), you may become eligible for German citizenship, provided you meet all language, integration, and legal requirements.
